How to Get to Nusa Lembongan from Sanur

Are you ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan? With its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, Nusa Lembongan is a paradise waiting to be explored. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a smooth boarding process and an enjoyable journey.

Distance and Duration

Nusa Lembongan Boat Transfer

The distance between Bali and Nusa Lembongan is approximately 15 kilometres, with a quick 30 to 40-minutes boat ride. Rest assured, the boats are spacious, safe, and equipped with modern safety gear, ensuring your peace of mind throughout the journey.

Sanur Port

The Port is newly opened in 2022 and located on Jalan Matahari Terbit. Every day, more than 20 vessels take travellers to various destinations including Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, Nusa Penida and Gili islands.

Boarding Steps

Get your boarding pass

Head to the fast boat office to collect your boarding pass and check in your luggage. At the office, you will receive a small paper boarding pass with QR code along with either a boat lanyard tag or a wristband, depending on the boat provider. Additionally, you’ll be given a note for your return journey, which is essential to keep safe as you’ll need to present it to the boat office in Nusa Lembongan on your departure date.

Walk to the port

Take a short walk to the port where your boat awaits. The entrance gate is located on the left side of the port. Along the way, you’ll pass several stalls where you can purchase water and snacks for your boat ride before entering the port.

Security Check and wait in the waiting room

Once you enter the port, you’ll encounter a barrier gate in the terminal. Here, the staff will scan the QR code on your boarding pass. Only those with a boarding pass QR code are permitted to enter the gate and proceed to the waiting room upstairs.

Board your boat

An announcer will call your boat’s name. Prepare your boarding pass once again and follow the crew for instructions.

Arrival Points in Nusa Lembongan

Arrival Points in Nusa Lembongan, Boat to Nusa Lembongan

When arriving in Nusa Lembongan, different fast boat operators drop passengers at different locations. Choosing the right one can save you time and make your transfer smoother. Here’s a quick guide to help you pick the best arrival point based on your stay:

Jungutbatu Bay

If you’re staying in the Jungutbatu area, D’Stars Fast Ferry and Setia Fast Ferry are the most convenient choices. They drop you right in the heart of Jungutbatu, making it easy to reach nearby accommodations.

Mushroom Bay

Staying near Mushroom Bay? The Tanis Fast Cruise is your best option. They offer direct access to this area, known for its calm waters and scenic surroundings.

Telatak Harbour

For a jetty-to-jetty experience, Rocky Fast Cruise is the ideal choice. Unlike other arrival points where passengers disembark into the water, Telatak is the only harbor that offers a dry landing via a proper jetty.

Each arrival point offers different advantages, so selecting the right fast boat operator ensures a hassle-free start to your Nusa Lembongan getaway!

Tips

  • Unless you book Rocky Fast Cruise with jetty to jetty service, you will land on water. Wear appropriate clothes (shorts and flip flops) and be mindful when carrying your suitcase as it can be hard to drag on sand. You can opt to store your luggage at one of the luggage drop services near the port for extra convenience.
  • Traffic to reach Sanur Port can be unpredictable and we strongly suggest to spare extra transport time. For the most practical way to reach the port, book a transfer that includes pickup and drop off by the boat company.
  • Go to the toilet before boarding as only some fast boats have a toilet onboard. But with the boat going at 50 km/h, it will not be the easiest toilet experience.
  • Sit at the back of the boat to reduce the up and down bouncing motion experienced during the ride.
  • The smoothest rides are often in the morning before the wind picks up. Less chop on the water.
  • No F&B service on the boat, so you can bring your own water and snacks.
  • Separate your travel bag and take a small backpack for your water and snacks as your luggage will be put in the main storage area of the boat.

Love for Lembongan: Empowering Health and Education in Our Community

At Love for Lembongan, our mission is to uplift the local community by ensuring access to quality healthcare and education. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, and our partnership with Bali Children Foundation, we’ve made significant strides in both areas, focusing on those who need it most. Here’s an update on how your support has been making a difference.

Revolutionising Education with EdTech and Engaging Learning Programs

EdTech, Love for Lembongan, Bali Children Foundation, Nusa Lembongan

During our visit on 18th March 2025 to SDN 3 Lembongan (Primary School in Jungut Batu) , we saw first-hand how our EdTech and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) programs are transforming classrooms. Each Grade 1 student is equipped with a tablet pre-loaded with interactive apps designed to enhance literacy and numeracy skills. With a user-friendly interface and engaging elements, these tablets have made learning more accessible, fun, and effective for young students.

Who is benefiting?

This initiative which was launched in September 2024, is already making a meaningful impact, reaching 147 Grade 1 students across five primary schools: SDN 1 in Sandy Bay, SDN 2 in Nusa Ceningan, SDN 3 Lembongan village, SDN 1 Jungutbatu, and SDN 3 Jungutbatu. A recent assessment conducted by the Bali Children Foundation showed that students from Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan outperformed those in other regencies in Bali, including Buleleng, Bangli, and Tabanan, where schools also participate in the EdTech program. The students here achieved the highest midline scores in both literacy and numeracy—an encouraging result!

You can support our initiative here.

Extra English Lessons

Beyond digital learning, we continue to enhance students’ education with our English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program, taught by Pak Benhar, who splits his time teaching at the five primary schools each week. The EFL program is being taught to grade 3 to 6 students.

Thanks to your generous donations together with the support and implementation of  the Bali Children Foundation, tablets were purchased, as well as the recruitment and training of teachers to support these programs. Your contributions have played a pivotal role in shaping a brighter future for Nusa Lembongan’s youngest learners.

Prioritising Health for a Stronger Community

In the health sector, our priority remains providing essential medical care to those in urgent need.

We are currently updating and reviewing our list of priority patients, as some of the elderly individuals we previously cared for have, sadly, passed away. While supporting seniors and children remains a key focus, this year we are also expanding our efforts to women’s and reproductive health. Through a new partnership with Bunda, we will be conducting Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) screenings—an early detection method for cervical cancer—among local residents.

Your donations are crucial in ensuring these vital healthcare initiatives continue to run, keeping Nusa Lembongan a healthy and thriving community.

Emergency Relief and Community Support

Last year, we supported a local resident, Ketut Stanley, who lost his home and belongings in a devastating fire. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to provide him with essential supplies to help him rebuild his life.

This year, we remain committed to providing emergency relief for local families facing unexpected hardships. Whether it’s medical emergencies, natural disasters, or other crises, your support allows us to respond swiftly and make a tangible difference in people’s lives.

Looking Ahead

As we continue our mission, we remain dedicated to expanding access to healthcare and education in Nusa Lembongan. Every donation, big or small, plays a vital role in sustaining and growing these initiatives.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our donors and supporters who make this work possible. Together, we are creating lasting change. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue making a positive impact in our community!

To make your journey smooth and your experience unforgettable, here are some essential tips with a little added flair to get you excited!

Book Your Stay Early

First Time in Nusa Lembongan, Villa Nusa Lembongan, Stay in Nusa Lembongan

Nusa Lembongan is a small island with limited accommodation options, and availability can fill up quickly, especially during high season. Booking your stay sooner than later is essential.

The limited availability and high demand means some properties impose non-refundable cancellation policies. We recommend taking up travel insurance, valid from the day of your booking, to protect you from “just in case” moments. This way, you’re covered for unexpected changes and can relax knowing your plans are protected.

Know When To Go

First Time in Nusa Lembongan, Villa Nusa Lembongan, Stay in Nusa Lembongan

Planning your trip during the right season can make a big difference. High season (June to August) is lively, with lots of visitors and a bustling atmosphere. This season also offers clear skies and calm seas, perfect for adventures.  It’s a great time if you love vibrant energy, but keep in mind that prices for accommodation and activities will be higher, and popular spots may be busier.

Low season (November to March) brings a quieter vibe, with fewer crowds and often better deals on places to stay. It’s perfect if you prefer a more relaxed experience. However, you might encounter some tropical rain showers, which can add a touch of adventure to your stay. Whichever season you choose, Nusa Lembongan’s beauty and charm remain constant.

Pick The Perfect Stay

Some areas are harder to reach than others, so you need to choose the area of your stay wisely. Check out our guide to the best areas to stay in Nusa Lembongan for more insights.

Nyepi Day

NYEPI DAY 2025: A GUIDE TO BALI’S DAY OF SILENCE

On 29th  March 2025, Bali will come to a complete standstill for Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence. Marking the start of the Hindu New Year, this sacred day is a time for self-reflection, cleansing, and renewal. While the island embraces total silence and stillness, understanding the traditions, preparations, and guidelines will help you appreciate the significance of this unique cultural event.

THE MEANING OF NYEPI

Nyepi is rooted in the Balinese Saka calendar and is deeply spiritual for the Hindu community. It is a day dedicated to introspection, allowing individuals to meditate on the past year and set intentions for the year ahead. Unlike typical New Year celebrations, Nyepi is observed with complete silence, darkness, and stillness to cleanse the world of negative energies and restore harmony.

BALINESE TRADITIONS LEADING UP TO NYEPI

Melasti Ceremony

A few days before Nyepi, Balinese Hindus gather for the Melasti Ceremony, a purification ritual held on the beaches. Dressed in traditional attire, families carry sacred objects from temples to the ocean, symbolising the cleansing of both the body and the earth from impurities. This vibrant and spiritual procession is a must-see for those in Bali during this time.

Ogoh-Ogoh Parade

On the eve of Nyepi, villages across Bali and Nusa Lembongan come alive with the Ogoh-Ogoh Parade. Gigantic, intricately designed paper-mâché effigies representing demons and evil spirits are carried through the streets in a lively procession. The night culminates in the burning of these statues, symbolising the purification of negative elements and a fresh start for the New Year. This parade is a highlight of Nyepi celebrations and a captivating experience for visitors.

NYEPI DAY RESTRICTIONS

From 6 AM on 29th March until 6 AM on 30th March, Bali and Nusa Lembongan observe complete silence. During this 24-hour period, the following restrictions are enforced:

  • No lights or electricity – homes and accommodations keep lighting minimal or off.
  • No work – businesses close, and daily activities pause.
  • No entertainment or noise – including music, television, and outdoor activities.
  • No travel – roads are empty as locals and tourists stay within their accommodations.
  • No cooking or eating (for some) – devout Hindus observe fasting.

While these practices are rooted in Hindu traditions, all residents and tourists are expected to follow them.

On Nusa Lembongan, the observance of Nyepi is even stricter than in Bali, with most accommodations operating with minimal or no staff and without power for the entire day. Visitors should prepare accordingly and respect the local customs.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR NYEPI DAY

To ensure a smooth and respectful Nyepi experience, consider the following preparations:

  • Stock up on food and essentials in advance – supermarkets and restaurants will be closed.
  • Charge your devices – power may be limited or unavailable in some accommodations.
  • Plan for a quiet, restful day – bring books, journals, or meditation guides.
  • Respect the silence – keep noise levels minimal and remain indoors.

BOAT SCHEDULE CHANGES

For those travelling to or from Nusa Lembongan, please note:

  • No boats will operate on 29th March 2025.
  • A revised schedule will apply on 28th March.
  • Normal boat services will resume on 30th March.

For further details or bookings, please WhatsApp +61 478 928 925.

Nyepi is a profound and beautiful tradition that showcases Bali’s deep spiritual roots. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, embracing this day of stillness offers a rare opportunity to pause, reflect, and connect with the serene energy of the island.

We trust all guests will honour and respect this sacred occasion, making it a memorable part of their Balinese experience.

Sandy Bay

Villa Tranquilla, Sandy Bay Nusa Lembongan, Lembongan Travel Tips

Sandy Bay, located on the western side of Nusa Lembongan, is known for its tranquillity and stunning natural scenery. This area is perfect for those looking for a more secluded getaway.

Sandy Bay is renowned for its pretty sunsets, dramatic cliffs, and secret beaches. The rocky landscape and fewer crowds make for a peaceful environment, perfect for relaxation. The famous Devil’s Tear is a highlight in this area, where waves crash against the cliffs, creating blowholes and impressive sea sprays.

While Sandy Bay doesn’t have as many dining options as other parts of the island, the quality of the available restaurants is exceptional. The Sandy Bay Beach Club is a popular spot, offering delicious meals with a beachfront view. The dining experience here is more intimate and upscale, perfect for romantic dinners or special occasions.

Since Sandy Bay is further away from the action, you might need to rent a scooter to get around, but don’t worry, Nusa Lembongan is small, making everything easy to get to.

Our accommodation picks: Villa Tranquilla (4 bedrooms) is ideal for families whilst couples will like Sea Shanty (1 bedroom), and young families or friends love Kokomo (2 bedrooms), or Lagarto (2 bedrooms).

Jungutbatu – Village

Villa Kasih, Jungutbatu Nusa Lembongan

Jungutbatu, positioned on the northern coast of Nusa Lembongan, is the hub and the main entrance to the island. This area is ideal for those who want to be in the middle of the action, with easy access to activities, restaurants, and ease of getting around.

Jungutbatu has the longest stretch of beach on the island, perfect for morning or afternoon strolls, sunbathing, and swimming. With a variety of cafes, restaurants, and beach clubs lining the beach, it is easy to get comfy and spend the whole day lounging on the sand.

For surfers, Shipwrecks and Razors surf breaks are located just off Jungutbatu Beach and can be reached either by paddling out or by taking a surf taxi. Alternatively, Playground and Lacerations are best accessed from Coconut Beach, which is conveniently connected to Jungutbatu by the boardwalk.

Numerous dive shops and tour operators are located on and around Jungutbatu Beach, offering a variety of excursions, from snorkeling, and scuba diving, to surf lessons, jet skiing, and much more.

Staying in Jungutbatu is great for travellers who enjoy being in a social environment with plenty of amenities and activities at their fingertips.

Many restaurants are either beach or cliff-front, providing a wonderful setting for enjoying meals with a view of the ocean.

Getting around Jungutbatu is easy, with well-paved roads and a variety of transportation options, including scooters, bicycles, taxis, and even buggies.

Our accommodation picks: Villa Kasih is a 3 bedroom private villa located on a quiet alley of Indiana Kenanga. Those looking for a more affordable option can consider Gecko Villa & Bungalows and Tropica Tranquility, both are minutes away from the beach and Jungutbatu’s eat street.

Galungan & Kuningan Day in Nusa Lembongan

Galungan and Kuningan day in Nusa Lembongan are two of the most important days on their calendar. Galungan is the day when all Balinese Hindu people celebrate Darma (good spirit) win over Adharma (bad spirit). Galungan is always celebrated on a Wednesday and ten days later, Kuningan is on a Saturday every 6 months (210 days) in the Balinese calendar. This year Galungan is on 23rd of April and Kuningan is on 3rd of May 2025.

The spirits of deceased relatives who have died and been cremated return to visit their former homes, the living family members have a responsibility to be hospitable through prayer and making offerings.

Read on to gain an understanding of what takes place on and in the lead up to Galungan and Kuningan Day on Nusa Lembongan.

It is celebrated with colour, as magnificent penjors ( large bamboo poles with offerings suspended at the ends) are installed along the roadside of businesses and homes.

25 days before Galungan, Hindus people will have ceremony call “ Tumpek Wariga’’ which is for the trees, especially those that will be used for Galungan like coconu, mango & banana trees.   They pray that these trees will having fruit for them to use as offerings on Galungan day.

6 days before Galungan, is called ‘’Sugihan Jawa’’, in Lembongan people will clean all the temples, surrounding areas and also the things that they will use for the ceremony on Galungan day

5 days before Galungan, is called  ‘’Sugihan Bali’’ on this day people will start to make offering from coconut leaves. Women in the family will start making a variety of offerings totally over 500+ by Gulangan day.

3 days before Galungan , is called ‘’Penyekeban’, people will go to their garden to harvest fruit and do fermentation of banana so they can use it in offerings and ceremonies for Galungan.

2 days before Galungan, is called ‘’Penyajaan’’ on this day Lembongan people will make Balinese cake and crackers to use in offerings for Galungan ceremonies.

1 day before Galungan, is called ‘’Penampahan’, men from the families will put up Penjors they have made from bamboo, coconut leaf, rice, garden produce, some will include seaweed, fruit, Balinese crackers & cake, plus one piece of yellow and white  cloth with the gods symbol on it. Families decorate their temples, house and prepare food such as satay and a special Balinese soup called “ares” made from chicken/pork  and banana tree trunk ready for the day ahead of celebrations.

On Galungan day,  people will start the day early with ceremonies from 5am at their house, they will then move onto their family temple and continue visiting other temples in their village. Normally the ceremonies will finish around 1pm.  They then return to their homes to enjoy a feast of food with their family and friends.

The day after Galungan, is called ‘’Umanis Galungan’’ this is time for the Lembongan people to take a break and relax with their families after long days preparing Galungan ceremonies.

Kuningan day, is celebrated 10 days after Galungan by the Lembongan people with smaller offerings than on Galungan.

5 days before Kuningan is the day Lembongan people will start to make offerings from coconut leaves.

3 days before Kuningan is called ‘’Penyekeban’’ people will go to their garden to harvest fruits and do fermentation from banana so they can use it in offerings and ceremonies for Kuningan.

2 days before Kuningan, is called ‘’Penyajaan’’ on this day Lembongan people will make Balinese cake and crackers to use in offerings for Kuningan ceremonies.

1 day before Kuningan  is called ‘’Penampahan’’, people will decorate their temple with new offerings for Kuningan also making satay as they did at Galungan, plus preparing the special dish called Nasi Kuning (yellow rice) which is symbolic of Kuningan Day.

On Kuningan day Lembongan people will start earlier than Galungan,  at 4AM in the morning offerings and ceremonies will begin.  This is because on Kuningan day the Gods only come to the temple for half day so they need to start early. On Kuningan day families only visit a few temples for the ceremony not all temples like on Galungan. In the afternoon Lembongan people will gather at the main temple for a Barong dance.

Same with Umanis Galungan, the day after Kuningan day everyone returns to their family house to clean and tidy up everything used for the recent ceremonies.

30 days after Galungan , the penjors are taken down and burnt along with the offerings that were used to decorate these bamboo structures.  The ash is gathered in respect to the gods and spread in the house garden.
