Reaching Out with Care: Health Visits to Nusa Ceningan

Our Love for Lembongan journey took us across to Nusa Ceningan, together with the dedicated medical teams from East Medical Clinic Center and Puskesmas (local hospital). The goal was simple yet vital — to check on our priority patients and elderly who need ongoing care and support.

Share Your Love for Lembongan

Pandu’s Story

Pandu, Kid with cerebral palsy in nusa ceningan, love for lembongan

Among the many faces we met was Pandu, a bright and resilient young boy living with cerebral palsy. Pandu’s father, with remarkable love and resourcefulness, built a handmade wheelchair so his son could move around the house.

However, Pandu now needs a special wheelchair that can properly support his posture and mobility — something that would make a world of difference to his comfort, safety, and quality of life. Accessing this kind of equipment is challenging on the island, and we’re hoping to raise funds to help Pandu get the wheelchair he deserves.

Supporting Our Elderly

Elderly in Nusa Ceningan, Love for Lembongan

We also checked on several elderly recovering from surgery, many of whom are still in need of physiotherapy and follow-up medical care. With limited healthcare access on Nusa Ceningan, visits like this are crucial to monitor their recovery and receive the medicines and vitamins they need.

Collaborative Care

Love for Lembongan, East Medical Care Center, Puskesmas Nusa Lembongan

Working alongside East Medical and Puskesmas (local hospital), our team carried out blood sugar and blood pressure checks, distributed multivitamins, and provided essential medication . These simple steps can prevent complications and give reassurance to those who otherwise might not have access to regular healthcare.

How You Can Help

Every visit reminds us of the ongoing needs within our island community. From specialised equipment like Pandu’s wheelchair to physiotherapy and recovery care for the elderlies, your contribution helps us continue this mission.

Your donations allow Love for Lembongan to provide vital health support where it’s needed most — reaching people who would otherwise go without care.

If you’d like to help Pandu receive his new wheelchair or support our ongoing medical visits, please consider donating to Love for Lembongan. Together, we can keep building a healthier, kinder future for Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

Nusa Lembongan and neighbouring island Ceningan have beautiful beaches, making it a water lover’s paradise for holiday makers.  There are beaches suitable for families with young children, snorkelling, surfing, catching some sun-rays, beachcombing & beachside bintangs!

The waters surrounding Nusa Lembongan are crystal clear with incredible visibility found in few places around the world.

Jungutbatu Beach

Jungutbatu Beach Nusa Lembongan

This is the main bay in Nusa Lembongan, where the majority of boats from Bali arrive. It is home to Lembongan’s 3 surf breaks (Playgrounds, Lacerations & Shipwrecks) and is also great for SUP boarding. The northern stretch is ideal for “beach-time” with its white sand and turquoise waters, the inner lagoon is generally calm & protected by the outer reef. The far northern end has a beautiful mini lagoon which is accessible on all tides, making it a stunning spot for beach lovers staying in Tamarind Bay.  It is a great bay for SUP boarding, and on a larger swell a fun left hand wave can form from the headland across the middle of the bay.  We have a range of Villas & Bungalow style accommodation in Tamarind Bay which are all in walking distance to the beach. Nusa Lembongan Surf Guide

If you are looking for waves, look no further, surfing in Nusa Lembongan offers something for everyone. No matter your level, there are countless “best session of my life” kinds of days waiting for you. Nusa Lembongan has a few different surf breaks spread along our picturesque white sandy shores.  Let us take you on a virtual tour of the best surf breaks in Lembongan and when to surf them.

CONDITIONS ARE EVERYTHING

The surrounding surf spots are incredibly tidal and condition dependant. At one moment, the ocean can resemble a lake, and the next it will look like something out of your favourite surfing magazine.
Strong currents are common around the higher tides, and extremely low tides will make most spots un-surfable. Be sure to take these factors into account before paddling out. If you are patient and choose the right window, you will score.

HOW DO I GET TO THE WAVES?

The surf is accessible by paddling, or alternatively catch a ride with a surf taxi or go with a surf school.

RESPECT THE LOCALS

The local surf crew on Lembongan are super experienced and know these waves like the back of their hands. They are friendly, they rip, and they will welcome you with open arms. No matter where we surf, the golden rule always applies; respect the locals. This is their home after all.

FROTHING! SO, WHERE SHOULD I SURF TODAY?

SHIPWRECKS

In the 70s a boat wrecked on the reef and gave the surf spot its name, Shipwrecks. A right-hander that breaks in deeper water that provides barrels and long drawn-out walls on its day. Shippies is geared towards the more experienced surfer and is primarily a shortboard wave. On smaller days, beginner surfers will find some fun, too. We recommend surfing at mid-tide on either side of the swing. If you are feeling unsure, check in with the local boys, they will provide you with friendly, solid advice.

RAZORS

Just left of Shippies is Razors. A left-hander that is perfect for beginner surfers looking to up-skill or take a lesson. Razors can be surfed on either side of the tide swing but is best avoided when it gets too low. Long, sectioney walls are on repeat, so there will be enough fun for everyone.
Remember to keep an eye out for the current that tends to creep in at a moment’s notice.

LACERATIONS

A natural wave pool, Lacerations will throw some of the most perfect right-hand barrels you have ever seen. Hollow, steep, long, and just plain epic! When the swell kicks up, Lacerations is best left for the more advanced surfers. Nestled above a sharp reef, the take-off at Lassos can be gnarly, but if you make it, you are in for the ride of a life time. Best surfed at mid-tide on either side of the swing
If spitting barrels is what you are looking for, then the lower it gets, the hollower it becomes.
A reef kiss from Lacerations is not uncommon for the dare-devils out there.

LESS GNARLY LACERATIONS

On the flip side, when conditions are friendlier and more manageable, Lacerations is perfect for a lesson or a fun free surf. The local surf schools will be happy to take you and provide a memorable surfing experience. Lacerations peels down the line and ensures long right hand rides, and perhaps even the odd left. The name is intimidating, but worry not, everyone is welcome at Lacerations. Match the conditions of the day with your surf level, and you will find some fun waves.

PLAYGROUNDS

A dreamy A-Frame located a short paddle away from Coconut Beach, Playgrounds is a surfer’s paradise. Split the peak with your mates and enjoy the breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs. On smaller days, Playgrounds can be enjoyed by any level of surfer. Having said that, when the swell turns up, Playgrounds is best enjoyed by those with more experience.

Higher tides bring about strong currents, so surfing Playgrounds at mid-tide is your best bet. Make sure to take your last wave before the reef starts to show. This is, after all, one of the sharpest and most lively reefs on the island.
Don’t let the name fool you.

MAHANA POINT

Just over the Yellow Bridge, Mahana Point is found on Nusa Ceningan Island. A left-hand point break that delivers long, faster walls. Due to its location, Mahana Point picks up a lot more swell, and can therefore be bigger and more tricky. The wave breaks beach-break style without a channel on either side. If Lembongan is flat, take your scooter over the bridge and you are likely to find a wave at Mahana Point.  It’s also a great spot for non-surfers, with a Warung and great viewing area to watch surf.

We hope this has inspired you to follow our mantra of eat, sleep, surf, repeat.

Lagoon LUXE on Ceningan

Lagoon LUXE on Ceningan

Villa Lagoon on Ceningan instantly takes your breath away, awakening your senses to the beauty of nature, simplicity and elegance.

This brand new 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom property overlooks the channel and beyond to Nusa Lembongan. Designed with sophistication, it embraces comfort, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor chill out zones.

With a soft muted palette on a white canvas, the introduction of matt black accents creates a style that blends perfectly with the natural beauty of the villa’s waterfront location.  Divine soft furnishings combine with ornamental details to create a sense of home and subtle luxury unique to Villa Lagoon on Ceningan.

Each of the 3 bedroom suites look out over the living area, to the terrazzo free formed pool and everchanging landscape of the channel.  On high tide the water sparkles a sea of turquoise, inviting you to cool off via the steps that lead directly from the villa.

Cool ocean breezes flow through out the villa as you move outside to the Mediterranean inspired pool deck. This area is dedicated to island mode, holiday vibes and centred around a stunning shaded sunken lounge that adjoins the pool.

During our stay, as the sun settled, low tide approached, changing the landscape from blue waters to a green of seaweed farms.  This tidal movement marks the start of the working day for the seaweed farmers, providing a back drop of island life in full process. It is humbling to watch the locals, mostly elderly, tending to their farms, nurturing crops and collecting harvests to then dry and on-sell.

Perfect for families and couples, Villa Lagoon Ceningan is close to some of our favourite restaurants including: Sea Breeze and Next Level Café. And a short scooter to the famed Blue Lagoon and nearby Mahana Point surf break.

Villa Lagoon Ceningan oozes simple elegance whilst also embodying the true essence of island life, a dichotomy rare to find and a privilege to experience.

Seaweed Farming returns to Lembongan

Seaweed Farming returns to Lembongan

COVID-19 has brought about many changes to our world as we knew it.  No truer for the local people of Nusa Lembongan & Ceningan.  As most of the population’s income was previously directly or indirectly derived from tourism, COVID-19 has caused some serious challenges.

In the typical spirit of the locals, whose Hindu faith always guides their journey, they looked within their own shores for opportunities to generate an income.  A businessman from Surabaya introduced seaweed farming to Lembongan in 1984, with the first cultivations taking place in Jungut Batu Bay. It was not so long ago (for many only 10 years), that seaweed farming was a major incomer earner for many people.  You too may remember the patch work of plots that created the ocean landscape in Jungut Batu, the Mangrove and in the channel between Lembongan & Ceningan.  For people who have been visiting the islands prior to 2010 seaweed farms, the harvesting process and drying in preparation for sale are iconic island memories.

As a result, seaweed farming in Lembongan has now re-emerged and the older generation have been key to helping re-establish it as a sustainable industry, educating and passing on their knowledge to younger family members who have only known tourism as an income stream.

The locals are realistic in their optimism for the return of tourism,  understanding it will not recover quickly.  As tourism has as good as disappeared for the last 6 months the demand for seaweed seedlings  and dried product is on a steady increase.

However not everyone is a seaweed farmer or knows how to cultivate seaweed.  The Lembongan Traveller’s Digital Marketing Manager spent a few days with some of the local seaweed farmers to gain an insight to the industry and techniques used so we could share the process with you.

Type of Seaweed

There are many types of seaweed that can be grown in Nusa Lembongan, one of which is green Katoni (eucheuma cottoni) seaweed which is commonly grown in the area around the Mangrove, other varieties are grown in Nusa Ceningan.

Katoni seaweed

Setting up a Seaweed Farm

The farmers initially buy seaweed seeds from Nusa Penida a 5 meter lengths of rope.  They then plant it on their ocean “land” to create a “box” which range in size, but are usually around 5 x 50 metres.  Each seaweed farm “box” is made up of rows of wooden supports and ropes. The seaweed seedlings are attached to these rows. The “box” contains approximately 100 bundles of seaweed.  It is very important that the ocean space chosen is accessible during high and low tide, this change of tide and water flow is also very important to the growth and productivity of the crop. Each “box” is marked with flags attached to wooden stakes.  Farmers attend their box daily at low tide between harvest times to check on any damage that may have been caused during high tide.

Harvesting

Seaweed can be harvested 30 days after planting and is usually harvested every full moon or new moon. Two crops are planted within a month so farmers will harvest every 15 days. Depending on the size of the each famer’s box, it can take up to 10 days for the harvesting process as this is generally done in the mornings on low tides. However, when low tides fall in the middle of the night farmers will spend midnight hours with head torches attending, it is a laborious and not for the faint hearted, as farmers are constantly exposed to the elements and weather.  In the mornings they cut the seaweed to take it  ashore and in the afternoon low tide they create new seedling rows for the next harvest.  Traditional Jukung boats are used by farmers to access their plots and transport the seaweed.

The farmers using traditional boat to bring the seaweeds seed to the “box” in the middle of ocean.

At the time of harvesting, the seaweed will have grown to 3 times the size of when it was first attached to the ropes.  During each harvest all of the seaweed from the rope supports are removed to be sorted, smaller & damages pieces are set aside for drying and more established growths are re-attached together in bundles of 2-3 pieces along the supports for the next months harvest.

Drying

These smaller and damaged pieces are laid out in the sun to be dried, which takes 3 days

Ready for sale

After drying, farmers will gather the seaweed to sell to a “seaweed collector”.  The “seaweed collectors” live on Lembongan and then transport it to Nusa Penida where it is on sold to export traders to make its way to be used in cosmetics.  Usually farmers can produce 400kg of dry seaweed, per month which currently sells for IDR 12,000 / kg.  There is also the opportunity for them to sell seedlings to new seaweed farmers, the price of 100 seedlings is around IDR 5 million.

Seaweed farming into the future

We are excited to see so many locals re-entering the seaweed farming industry and hope it will continue well into the future to operate in unison with tourism when travel resumes.  The Lembongan Traveller is here to support the Lembongan & Ceningan seaweed farming industry and its prosperity.  This unique way of farming requires no pesticides or fertilizers. Seaweed cultivation also provides environmental benefits including:

  • Absorbing carbon dioxide ( green house gas) – one hectare of sea can be used to produce annually 40 tonnes of dry seaweed which will absorb 20+ tonnes of green house gas during cultivation
  • Wastes can be used as fertilizers for land based agriculture
  • Seaweed can only be grown in a healthy environment, so seaweed farmers will actively participate in maintaining beach and foreshore cleanliness

We are keen to support the community with looking into more opportunities for seaweed farmers and collectors, such as potentially providing seaweed for products being developed by Evoware – edible cups and packaging made from seaweed….we have contacted them to see if Lembongan’s seaweed is combatable.

COVID-19 & Seaweed Farming unite

Katoni seaweed is a source of carrageenan, a gelling agent in both foods and cosmetics. This brings a twist that could see COVID-19 and Lembongan seaweed farmers unite as it can be used in the production of hand santizer.  See link below to an article that includes a method of making santizer using seaweed:
