Meet Pak Junior: The Lembongan Local Behind Setia Fast Ferry
Gone are the days of long, uncomfortable journeys to Nusa Lembongan. What was once a two-hour sampan ride has evolved into a smooth 30-minute fast boat journey from Sanur’s modern harbour.
Setia Fast Ferry was among the pioneers of a more premium way to cross the channel, introducing a fleet designed with marine-grade air conditioning, wider cabins and plush seating.
In this interview, we speak with co-founder I Wayan Redita — affectionately known as Pak Junior — about his journey, the evolution of sea transport between Bali and Lembongan, and his commitment to elevating his hometown to a whole new level.
Can you tell us how Setia Fast Ferry began, and a little about your background before starting the company?
Setia started with a desire to create a better travel experience between Bali and Nusa Lembongan. I was born and raised in Lembongan and have watched tourism on the island grow and travellers’ needs change over the years.
The name Setia is also deeply personal. It was taken from my late father, I Nyoman Setia, a hardworking man who believed strongly in commitment and integrity. I still remember the small wooden boat he used to transport seaweed, which was also named Setia. Naming our fast ferry after him was a way to honour his spirit and the values he passed on to me.
Before starting Setia, I had spent many years working in business and tourism. I saw an opportunity to create a fast ferry service focused not just on speed, but also on comfort, safety and service — making the journey to Lembongan part of the holiday experience itself.
Setia is known for its premium approach, from marine-grade air conditioning and wide-body boats to its strong focus on safety. What was the thinking behind this?
For me, when you’re carrying people, safety and comfort come first. We knew travellers had high expectations, so from the beginning, we didn’t want to simply build a fast boat.
We wanted to create a journey that felt spacious, comfortable and safe. Many of the details may not always be visible to passengers, but they make a big difference to their experience. We want people to choose Setia not only because it’s fast, but because they feel safe, comfortable and confident travelling with us.
What has been the biggest challenge, and was there a moment when you realised Setia had really come a long way?
Building something from scratch and earning people’s trust was probably the biggest challenge. In the ferry industry, trust is everything.
There are also the daily challenges of operations, maintenance, weather, staffing and maintaining a consistent standard of service.
One of the most rewarding moments is seeing first-time guests come back and recommend Setia to their friends and family. For me, that’s when you realise you’ve built something more than just a transport company.
Looking ahead, what’s next for Setia?
We still have many plans for Setia. Our main focus is to continue improving our service, fleet and overall passenger experience.
We want Setia to become one of the most trusted ferry brands for travel between Bali and Lembongan, for both Indonesian and international travellers. We hope to continue growing our network and fleet, while staying true to the safety and quality standards we’ve had from the beginning.
You grew up in Lembongan. How has the island changed, and are there any childhood memories that still stand out?
Lembongan has changed enormously. It was much simpler when I was growing up, and the atmosphere was very different. Today, it has become an international destination welcoming travellers from all over the world.
But despite its rapid growth, I think Lembongan has managed to keep its own character and natural beauty. I have many childhood memories of the sea, the beaches and local community life. That’s probably why I care deeply about how the island develops. I want to see Lembongan continue to grow while protecting what makes it so special.
Is there a guest experience or story that has stayed with you?
There have been many. We meet people from all over the world, but what I enjoy most is seeing guests who come to Lembongan for a holiday and end up returning again and again.
It’s also always meaningful when guests take the time to thank us after their trip because they genuinely enjoyed the experience. At the end of the day, tourism isn’t just about selling a ticket — it’s about creating experiences that people remember.
When you’re not working, where do you like to eat or unwind in Lembongan?
When I’m not working, I prefer somewhere relaxed and not too busy. Since my work involves meeting people all day, I enjoy having some quiet time.
