Getting to Nusa Lembongan with Rocky Fast Cruise

ROCKY FAST CRUISES

Getting to Nusa Lembongan with Rocky – we make it easy and stressfree

The captain announces that the plane will be landing soon at Denpasar Airport; you’ve got your headphones on playing your favourite song, your sunnies sit atop your head, and the excitement reaches an all-time high as the wheels hit the tarmac. Welcome to the Island of the Gods!

Let us give you a step-by-step about arriving in Bali and, more importantly, how to get to Nusa Lembongan with Rocky.

P.s. don’t miss 15% off for boat transfers when you book your accommodation with us!

IMMIGRATION

Upon reaching the arrival hall at Denpasar airport, proceed directly to the Visa On Arrival (VOA) counter and purchase a 30-day visa on arrival. The VOA will cost USD$35 (approx AUD$50) and is valid for 30 days, extendable for an extra 30 days.

AIRPORT PICK UP

Customs cleared! One step closer to throwing your towel down and soaking up the sun.

Make your way to the airport terminal exit, where you will see people lined up with signs, a Rocky Representative will be waiting and holding a placard with your name on it. Once you have found each other and are good to go, they will help you with your luggage and escort you to the vehicle.

AIRPORT → SANUR

The journey from the airport to the Sanur port is straightforward. It will take approximately 45 minutes to reach the ferry terminal, depending on traffic conditions and the time of day. The driver will make a quick stop at the Rocky office to collect tickets and then drop you directly in front of the new terminal, where you will wait for your boat to Nusa Lembongan.

No matter how many bags you bring, they are all included in the ticket price, and yes, surfboards are included, too!

HOTEL PICK UP

If you are already in Bali, the process is similar.  Rocky Fast Cruises will arrange to collect you directly from your hotel and drop you off at the ferry terminal. A representative will make contact one day before your travel date to confirm the pick-up time and location. They offer pick-up services from all areas on mainland Bali and include pick-up in the price of the ticket for most locations. If you are staying in a more remote area, an additional fee will apply.

SANUR FAST FERRY TERMINAL

Rocky Fast Cruises has 4 boat transfers from Sanur to Nusa Lembongan per day. We will do our best to help you coordinate a transfer time with your flight arrival and estimated travel time between the airport and the ferry terminal. Most of the accommodations on the island have a check-in time of 2:00 pm, so an afternoon boat would be best.

The new terminal is a large, air-conditioned, and very comfortable space. Overhead screens display the arrival and departure times so that you can keep track of the Rocky Fast Cruises schedule. Free WiFi is available throughout the property, and you will find a variety of food and beverage stalls just outside the terminal entrance.

SANUR → LEMBONGAN

Boarding time, let’s go!

A boarding announcement will be made and direct you to the specific boarding location. Once you have reached the gate, an attendant will check and scan your ticket. The walk toward the boat is short, and the boarding process is effortless. Grab a seat towards the back of the boat if you can. The journey across the ocean will be less bumpy, closer to the stern.

Once the lines are loose, and the boat is set free, the final leg of your trip will begin.

TOUCH DOWN ON NUSA LEMBONGAN

The captain will dock the boat on the island’s eastern side at the Rocky Beach Club jetty. That’s right; Rocky Fast Cruises is a jetty-to-jetty transfer. Once you have arrived, a driver will drop you off at your new home away from home.

All land transportation on Nusa Lembongan is included in your ticket price.

Now, go on! Kick your feet up and enjoy being on island time!

DEPARTING PARADISE

Heading back to the mainland is just as easy as when you left. Check-out from your accommodation is usually at around 10 am,  Rocky provides two morning transfers back to Sanur.

A Rocky representative will be in touch 1 day before departure to confirm the pick-up location and time.

LEMBONGAN → SANUR

Time to leave paradise!

A driver from Rocky Fast Cruises will collect you from your hotel or villa and provide transport to the Rocky Beach Club. Once the boat is loaded, the engines will start, and you will have one last opportunity to capture a picture of the beautiful island behind you.

The journey back to Sanur is roughly 30 minutes, providing enough time to scroll through your camera roll and reminisce on your wonderful holiday.

Upon arrival in Sanur, the staff will take your luggage to a car that will drop you at the airport for your flight home or to your Bali accommodation ready for the next part of your holiday.

Once again, all land transportation is included in your original ticket price.

Best Vegan Food on Nusa Lembongan

In recent years, Bali has become a major hotspot for its progressive vegan food scene, and rightly so. Nusa Lembongan has followed suit and  has a few of its very own treasures.
We have created a guide for the best vegan food on Nusa Lembongan, so your holiday will not only be sun-soaked but also loaded with yummy and memorable eats. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy the words that will eventually become a feast on your table.

THE PLAYFUL TABLE

Nusa Lembongan Island has a new kid on the block and they have certainly entered the vegan scene with a BANG. The Playful Table offers a small, yet delicious menu that will leave you craving more. Located in-between Tamarind Bay and Coconut Beach, they boast exquisite ocean views and are surrounded by lush greenery. The perfect place for a morning coffee, brunch with friends, or dinner under the stars. When visiting The Playful Table, we recommend ordering the “Surprise Me”. This gives Chef Made the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind, personalised dish, especially for you. Trust us, you will not regret it.

The owner, Oria, has been visiting Nusa Lembongan since she was a little girl and thus has a deep connection with the island. She has built a team of passionate people who care deeply about providing the full dining experience.

Chef Made brings tangible joy and positive energy into her kitchen. She uses fresh, locally sourced ingredients and produces from their own permaculture garden. Homemade is the religion, everything that makes its way onto your plate has been hand-crafted by her.
The flavours are endless.

Ombak Zero Waste Cafe

Nothing beats feasting on scrumptious vegan goodness with your toes in the sand and eyes on the waves. Located on Jungut Batu beach, Ombak opened in 2018 and quickly became everyone’s favourite oceanfront cafe. Nagi, the wonderful owner from Bali, started Ombak with the vision of maintaining a zero-waste policy as much as possible, to protect and conserve our beautiful island.
Walking into Ombak is like stepping into your own sunny, salty living room. The team exudes happiness and welcomes guests with open hearts and bright smiles.

Consistency is an Ombak trademark. The food is always outstanding! Nagi sources fresh ingredients that will send your tastebuds into a flavour-filled paradise. Not only is the final creation a hit, but most of their sauces, toppings, and desserts are 100% homemade, too. When ordering a coffee, get it with Ombak’s signature homemade coconut milk. It’s made fresh, daily, without preservatives.

Choosing a meal can be hard, luckily we have 3 meals in a day. A few crowd favourites include their vitamin-packed smoothie bowls, the marinated Tempeh Satay, or Vegan Nasi Campur. Did someone say dessert? We insist on trying the homemade Vegan Salted Caramel Tart. Don’t ask why, just do it! You may even order a second one.

Bali Eco Deli

Located on the main drag of Jungut Batu, Bali Eco Deli was one of the first Western style cafes to open on the Island. A wonderful, shaded space with loads of foliage will give you the feeling of peace whilst enjoying a coffee, juice, or some tasty Vegan food.

Valentin, originally from France has dedicated himself to serving organic, fresh food and avoids using MSG or any other high-preservative sauces and condiments. Eco-friendly by nature, the restaurant features a small on-site wastewater and solar-powered garden. The menu is vast and everything is inviting. We love the crunchy veggie Stir Fry served with pineapple, air-fried tempeh, and tofu. A true plate of goodness.

If you are looking to put your sweet tooth at bay, grab one of their energy balls. They are the perfect treat after a feed and go well with a cup of coffee, too. Making good food is easy, but making great food is an art form.

Tucked away under a tree, the Lago Beach Cafe is situated on beautiful Coconut Beach. Offering front-row seats to the ocean and more specifically, Playgrounds surf break. Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, it would be foolish not to visit at least once during the day. Grab a smoothie, a Quinoa Veggie Bowl and enjoy the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. Top it off with a Vegan Dreamwave donut and that’s what we call a win.

If you are lucky enough to be on Nusa Lembongan over the weekend, be sure to relish in Indian under the Tree, an incredibly authentic menu created by Indian born Chef, Rohan. Dive into some delectable Aloo Pakoras, and crunchy Masala Poppadums to start before indulging in a divine Veggie Korma curry. It is here where India meets paradise, and for this, Lago Beach Cafe is a real gem.

Ginger & Jamu

Strolls down the beach become even better when charming cafes like Ginger & Jamu are ready to welcome you into their tropical oasis. The most common misconception of the vegan diet is that one would survive purely on a few carrot sticks and other raw ingredients that only a rabbit would eat.

This could not be more wrong. Jamie, from New Zealand, created Ginger & Jamu from a love of yoga, healthy eating, island living, and good vibes. The menu is almost 100% plant-based and guarantees healthy ingredients, premium cooking oil, and no MSG. They strive to source local produce as well as other foodstuffs that will nourish your body and bring a smile to your face. Everything is fresh, handmade, and prepared with love.

No matter the time of day, you are sure to find yummy vegan delights that will suit any mood. Vegan pancakes, Tempeh tacos, or a falafel bowl. Surely this is what food heaven looks like. Don’t forget to pop your head inside and check out their selection of delicious Vegan sweet treats.

Alponte Ristorante

Pizza is calling and the answer should always be YES.
Hop on your scooter and take a slow drive toward the yellow bridge, an iconic landmark connecting Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan Islands’.

Whilst cruising the beautiful coastline you will come across little Italy in the form of the lovely Alponte Ristorante, created by Italy’s Andrea and his adorable wife Tete. Dressed in all white, this quaint eatery will demand your attention and pull you right in. The atmosphere is awesome and the views only enhance the appeal. Overlooking the turquoise channel that flows between the two islands whilst munching on delicious vegan pizza is as glorious as it sounds.

We can assure you that this is no regular pie, it is topped with a thick tomato base, loaded with vegetables, and thrown into a wood-fired oven until perfection is reached. Pizza in paradise.
Alponte also offers homemade vegan pasta and are happy to adapt the menu so that you can enjoy your favourites with a vegan twist.

Diving in Nusa Lembongan

PARADISE IS A PLACE UNDERWATER

The best way to observe fish is to become a fish.
Nusa Lembongan diving provides underwater adventures that are jaw-dropping and hard to replicate. Thousands of different marine species roam the reefs and deliver spectacles that will be imprinted in your memories for a long time to come.

THE 2 SEASONS

This turquoise utopia experiences two distinct seasons; the dry and wet seasons. Luckily, they are equally as good as each other. During the dry season (March – October) we experience cooler diving days. The water temperatures can drop below 20°C. On the flip side, during the wet season (November – February) the average temperatures are a toasty 25°C – 29°C.

OH, THE PLACES YOU WILL GO

Manta Point, being the furthest, but the most breathtaking journey is where the famous reef Mantas spend their days. They dance in slow motion and put on performances, unlike anything you have ever seen. Snorkellers can get a piece of the action, too. Simply throw on your mask, snorkel, and fins, and watch the show from above.

A must-do while visiting Nusa Lembongan.

Vibrant, colourful, and abundant are the words most used to describe Crystal Bay. It is home to a variety of fish, sea turtles, and the elusive Mola-Mola. Be sure to bring a camera, you don’t want to miss the photo opportunities that lie around every corner.

Heading further north is where we find the majority of our drift diving sites. The coast is filled with majestic sloping reefs, countless marine creatures, and the ride of a life time. Dropping below the surface is where it all begins. Mild to moderate currents usher us along the reef as we take in a live-action natural masterpiece.

Why we LOVE Sandy Bay

Why we LOVE Sandy Bay

Sandy Bay is one of Lembongan’s most iconic destinations.  It is home to white sands, rolling waves ( not the surfing kind), famous sunsets, the iconic Sandy Bay Beach Club and private villas to suit all budgets.

Take a stroll and swim in the beautiful azure waters at Dream Beach located next to the famed Devils Tear.  Here you will be able to spot turtles and rainbows in the mist of the blow holes, always take caution with respect for the power of the ocean.

Mushroom Bay is a short scooter ride from Sandy Bay where you can swim, snorkel and relax in the beachfront restaurants.  One of our favourites is Hai Bar and Grill who also offer a handy complimentary pick up and drop off service.

Lembongan Surf Team Competition 2021 – Series 1

Series #1 – 30th May 2021

Playground Surf Break, Nusa Lembongan

Here is a wrap-up of the Lembongan Surf Team Competition Series #1 for 2021, proudly organized in conjunction with the Indonesian Surfing League. It was a wonderful day seeing a total of 68 surfers compete across 3 divisions who were supported on the side lines by the local community.

The day saw good wave conditions, in the morning it started with consistent 2ft sets,  then in the afternoon it went up to 3 – 4ft and later increasing to 4-6ft.

The event started in the morning at 7.45am with round 1 of the Junior U/16 Boys Division, with good waves and good weather. In Round 1 of the Junior Division, there was lots of action and high scores obtained in several heats such as Miko Pebiana (6.45), Yoga Andika (5.43) and Un Jayantara who showed their talent in the waves.

It continued in the Master Division Round 1, where the waves started to get a little bigger and the currents began to be felt but it didn’t discourage our masters showing their skills.  At noon the sun was out and it was getting hot, the waves were slightly bigger, the contest committee decided to continue to the Open Division, the long-awaited action and Open Round 1 began.

In the first round we saw lots of action, including some great scores from Putra Hermawan (6.75) followed by his brother Agus Purnawan (6.23). It continued into round 2, the waves were getting bigger and the current stronger. In the second round the wave conditions were a little difficult because of the high tide and the waves were very bumpy and making it difficult for surfers who would compete in the second round, but at the end of the 2nd round, it was Agus Frimanto wearing a red shirt who managed to get the highest score (8.38).

Both the temperature and competition was heating up as we proceeded to the Quarter final where in the 3rd heat 3rd we saw some great waves and score total (16.21) from Agus Frimanto.

In the semi-final of the Open division, there was huge excitement when Jaka Satria  managed to get a barrel and the highest score of the day (9.75),  stopping Agus Frimanto in 5th place.

It was late afternoon and when we headed into the finals for the Junior, Master and Open divisions.

Starting with the  final of the Juniors, where the waves were big and with the tide going out. Lembongan Surf Team provided 2 life guards to maintain the safety and comfort of the junior surfers, as their average age was 13 years.

They all showed excellent sportsmanship with great skills for the following results:

Junior Division

1st  –  Arida Setiawan

2nd – Bagas

3rd –  Un Jayaantara

4th – Yoga Andika

In finals of the Masters  division  we saw (red) Lhaena, (white) Licek, (yellow) Cakil and (blue) Apri, the competition was quite fierce at the beginning as the wave conditions were improving and the current was starting to disappear, but all surfers only got an average score of between 2 points – 3.20 points.

Then in the last 7 minutes, the yellow surfer managed to make the highest score, it was (5.80) and took him to the winners podium.

The Open Division was next,  where the scores were very close:

1st – Tia Nustawan (13.53)

2nd –  Putra Hermawan (13.41)

3rd – Agus Purnawan (13.23)

4th – Jaka Satria (12.68)

We done to everyone involved and the Lembongan Surf Team Competition for a great Series 1.

SEAWEED FARMING RETURNS TO LEMBONGAN, Lembongan Hotels, Lembongan Resorts, Lembongan Bungalows, Lembongan Villas, The Lembongan Traveller, Nusa Lembongan Hotels, Nusa Lembongan Resorts, Nusa Lembongan Bungalows, Nusa Lembongan Villas,

Seaweed Farming returns to Lembongan

Seaweed Farming returns to Lembongan

COVID-19 has brought about many changes to our world as we knew it.  No truer for the local people of Nusa Lembongan & Ceningan.  As most of the population’s income was previously directly or indirectly derived from tourism, COVID-19 has caused some serious challenges.

In the typical spirit of the locals, whose Hindu faith always guides their journey, they looked within their own shores for opportunities to generate an income.  A businessman from Surabaya introduced seaweed farming to Lembongan in 1984, with the first cultivations taking place in Jungut Batu Bay. It was not so long ago (for many only 10 years), that seaweed farming was a major incomer earner for many people.  You too may remember the patch work of plots that created the ocean landscape in Jungut Batu, the Mangrove and in the channel between Lembongan & Ceningan.  For people who have been visiting the islands prior to 2010 seaweed farms, the harvesting process and drying in preparation for sale are iconic island memories.

As a result, seaweed farming in Lembongan has now re-emerged and the older generation have been key to helping re-establish it as a sustainable industry, educating and passing on their knowledge to younger family members who have only known tourism as an income stream.

The locals are realistic in their optimism for the return of tourism,  understanding it will not recover quickly.  As tourism has as good as disappeared for the last 6 months the demand for seaweed seedlings  and dried product is on a steady increase.

However not everyone is a seaweed farmer or knows how to cultivate seaweed.  The Lembongan Traveller’s Digital Marketing Manager spent a few days with some of the local seaweed farmers to gain an insight to the industry and techniques used so we could share the process with you.

Type of Seaweed

There are many types of seaweed that can be grown in Nusa Lembongan, one of which is green Katoni (eucheuma cottoni) seaweed which is commonly grown in the area around the Mangrove, other varieties are grown in Nusa Ceningan.

Katoni seaweed

Setting up a Seaweed Farm

The farmers initially buy seaweed seeds from Nusa Penida a 5 meter lengths of rope.  They then plant it on their ocean “land” to create a “box” which range in size, but are usually around 5 x 50 metres.  Each seaweed farm “box” is made up of rows of wooden supports and ropes. The seaweed seedlings are attached to these rows. The “box” contains approximately 100 bundles of seaweed.  It is very important that the ocean space chosen is accessible during high and low tide, this change of tide and water flow is also very important to the growth and productivity of the crop. Each “box” is marked with flags attached to wooden stakes.  Farmers attend their box daily at low tide between harvest times to check on any damage that may have been caused during high tide.

Harvesting

Seaweed can be harvested 30 days after planting and is usually harvested every full moon or new moon. Two crops are planted within a month so farmers will harvest every 15 days. Depending on the size of the each famer’s box, it can take up to 10 days for the harvesting process as this is generally done in the mornings on low tides. However, when low tides fall in the middle of the night farmers will spend midnight hours with head torches attending, it is a laborious and not for the faint hearted, as farmers are constantly exposed to the elements and weather.  In the mornings they cut the seaweed to take it  ashore and in the afternoon low tide they create new seedling rows for the next harvest.  Traditional Jukung boats are used by farmers to access their plots and transport the seaweed.

The farmers using traditional boat to bring the seaweeds seed to the “box” in the middle of ocean.

At the time of harvesting, the seaweed will have grown to 3 times the size of when it was first attached to the ropes.  During each harvest all of the seaweed from the rope supports are removed to be sorted, smaller & damages pieces are set aside for drying and more established growths are re-attached together in bundles of 2-3 pieces along the supports for the next months harvest.

Drying

These smaller and damaged pieces are laid out in the sun to be dried, which takes 3 days

Ready for sale

After drying, farmers will gather the seaweed to sell to a “seaweed collector”.  The “seaweed collectors” live on Lembongan and then transport it to Nusa Penida where it is on sold to export traders to make its way to be used in cosmetics.  Usually farmers can produce 400kg of dry seaweed, per month which currently sells for IDR 12,000 / kg.  There is also the opportunity for them to sell seedlings to new seaweed farmers, the price of 100 seedlings is around IDR 5 million.

Seaweed farming into the future

We are excited to see so many locals re-entering the seaweed farming industry and hope it will continue well into the future to operate in unison with tourism when travel resumes.  The Lembongan Traveller is here to support the Lembongan & Ceningan seaweed farming industry and its prosperity.  This unique way of farming requires no pesticides or fertilizers. Seaweed cultivation also provides environmental benefits including:

  • Absorbing carbon dioxide ( green house gas) – one hectare of sea can be used to produce annually 40 tonnes of dry seaweed which will absorb 20+ tonnes of green house gas during cultivation
  • Wastes can be used as fertilizers for land based agriculture
  • Seaweed can only be grown in a healthy environment, so seaweed farmers will actively participate in maintaining beach and foreshore cleanliness

We are keen to support the community with looking into more opportunities for seaweed farmers and collectors, such as potentially providing seaweed for products being developed by Evoware – edible cups and packaging made from seaweed….we have contacted them to see if Lembongan’s seaweed is combatable.

COVID-19 & Seaweed Farming unite

Katoni seaweed is a source of carrageenan, a gelling agent in both foods and cosmetics. This brings a twist that could see COVID-19 and Lembongan seaweed farmers unite as it can be used in the production of hand santizer.  See link below to an article that includes a method of making santizer using seaweed:
