Galungan & Kuningan Day in Nusa Lembongan

Galungan and Kuningan day in Nusa Lembongan are two of the most important days on their calendar. Galungan is the day when all Balinese Hindu people celebrate Darma (good spirit) win over Adharma (bad spirit). Galungan is always celebrated on a Wednesday and ten days later, Kuningan is on a Saturday every 6 months (210 days) in the Balinese calendar. This year Galungan is on 23^rdof April and Kuningan is on 3^rd of May 2025.

The spirits of deceased relatives who have died and been cremated return to visit their former homes, the living family members have a responsibility to be hospitable through prayer and making offerings.

Read on to gain an understanding of what takes place on and in the lead up to Galungan and Kuningan Day on Nusa Lembongan.

It is celebrated with colour, as magnificent penjors ( large bamboo poles with offerings suspended at the ends) are installed along the roadside of businesses and homes.

25 days before Galungan, Hindus people will have ceremony call “ Tumpek Wariga’’ which is for the trees, especially those that will be used for Galungan like coconu, mango & banana trees. They pray that these trees will having fruit for them to use as offerings on Galungan day.

6 days before Galungan, is called ‘’Sugihan Jawa’’, in Lembongan people will clean all the temples, surrounding areas and also the things that they will use for the ceremony on Galungan day

5 days before Galungan, is called ‘’Sugihan Bali’’ on this day people will start to make offering from coconut leaves. Women in the family will start making a variety of offerings totally over 500+ by Gulangan day.

3 days before Galungan , is called ‘’Penyekeban’, people will go to their garden to harvest fruit and do fermentation of banana so they can use it in offerings and ceremonies for Galungan.

2 days before Galungan, is called ‘’Penyajaan’’ on this day Lembongan people will make Balinese cake and crackers to use in offerings for Galungan ceremonies.

1 day before Galungan, is called ‘’Penampahan’, men from the families will put up Penjors they have made from bamboo, coconut leaf, rice, garden produce, some will include seaweed, fruit, Balinese crackers & cake, plus one piece of yellow and white cloth with the gods symbol on it. Families decorate their temples, house and prepare food such as satay and a special Balinese soup called “ares” made from chicken/pork and banana tree trunk ready for the day ahead of celebrations.

On Galungan day, people will start the day early with ceremonies from 5am at their house, they will then move onto their family temple and continue visiting other temples in their village. Normally the ceremonies will finish around 1pm. They then return to their homes to enjoy a feast of food with their family and friends.

The day after Galungan, is called ‘’Umanis Galungan’’ this is time for the Lembongan people to take a break and relax with their families after long days preparing Galungan ceremonies.

Kuningan day, is celebrated 10 days after Galungan by the Lembongan people with smaller offerings than on Galungan.

5 days before Kuningan is the day Lembongan people will start to make offerings from coconut leaves.

3 days before Kuningan is called ‘’Penyekeban’’ people will go to their garden to harvest fruits and do fermentation from banana so they can use it in offerings and ceremonies for Kuningan.

2 days before Kuningan, is called ‘’Penyajaan’’ on this day Lembongan people will make Balinese cake and crackers to use in offerings for Kuningan ceremonies.

1 day before Kuningan is called ‘’Penampahan’’, people will decorate their temple with new offerings for Kuningan also making satay as they did at Galungan, plus preparing the special dish called Nasi Kuning (yellow rice) which is symbolic of Kuningan Day.

On Kuningan day Lembongan people will start earlier than Galungan, at 4AM in the morning offerings and ceremonies will begin. This is because on Kuningan day the Gods only come to the temple for half day so they need to start early. On Kuningan day families only visit a few temples for the ceremony not all temples like on Galungan. In the afternoon Lembongan people will gather at the main temple for a Barong dance.

Same with Umanis Galungan, the day after Kuningan day everyone returns to their family house to clean and tidy up everything used for the recent ceremonies.

30 days after Galungan , the penjors are taken down and burnt along with the offerings that were used to decorate these bamboo structures. The ash is gathered in respect to the gods and spread in the house garden.

Nusa Lembongan Surf Guide

If you are looking for waves, look no further, surfing in Nusa Lembongan offers something for everyone. No matter your level, there are countless “best session of my life” kinds of days waiting for you. Nusa Lembongan has a few different surf breaks spread along our picturesque white sandy shores. Let us take you on a virtual tour of the best surf breaks in Lembongan and when to surf them.

CONDITIONS ARE EVERYTHING

The surrounding surf spots are incredibly tidal and condition dependant. At one moment, the ocean can resemble a lake, and the next it will look like something out of your favourite surfing magazine.
Strong currents are common around the higher tides, and extremely low tides will make most spots un-surfable. Be sure to take these factors into account before paddling out. If you are patient and choose the right window, you will score.

HOW DO I GET TO THE WAVES?

The surf is accessible by paddling, or alternatively catch a ride with a surf taxi or go with a surf school.

RESPECT THE LOCALS

The local surf crew on Lembongan are super experienced and know these waves like the back of their hands. They are friendly, they rip, and they will welcome you with open arms. No matter where we surf, the golden rule always applies; respect the locals. This is their home after all.

FROTHING! SO, WHERE SHOULD I SURF TODAY?

SHIPWRECKS

In the 70s a boat wrecked on the reef and gave the surf spot its name, Shipwrecks. A right-hander that breaks in deeper water that provides barrels and long drawn-out walls on its day. Shippies is geared towards the more experienced surfer and is primarily a shortboard wave. On smaller days, beginner surfers will find some fun, too. We recommend surfing at mid-tide on either side of the swing. If you are feeling unsure, check in with the local boys, they will provide you with friendly, solid advice.

RAZORS

Just left of Shippies is Razors. A left-hander that is perfect for beginner surfers looking to up-skill or take a lesson. Razors can be surfed on either side of the tide swing but is best avoided when it gets too low. Long, sectioney walls are on repeat, so there will be enough fun for everyone.
Remember to keep an eye out for the current that tends to creep in at a moment’s notice.

LACERATIONS

A natural wave pool, Lacerations will throw some of the most perfect right-hand barrels you have ever seen. Hollow, steep, long, and just plain epic! When the swell kicks up, Lacerations is best left for the more advanced surfers. Nestled above a sharp reef, the take-off at Lassos can be gnarly, but if you make it, you are in for the ride of a life time. Best surfed at mid-tide on either side of the swing
If spitting barrels is what you are looking for, then the lower it gets, the hollower it becomes.
A reef kiss from Lacerations is not uncommon for the dare-devils out there.

LESS GNARLY LACERATIONS

On the flip side, when conditions are friendlier and more manageable, Lacerations is perfect for a lesson or a fun free surf. The local surf schools will be happy to take you and provide a memorable surfing experience. Lacerations peels down the line and ensures long right hand rides, and perhaps even the odd left. The name is intimidating, but worry not, everyone is welcome at Lacerations. Match the conditions of the day with your surf level, and you will find some fun waves.

PLAYGROUNDS

A dreamy A-Frame located a short paddle away from Coconut Beach, Playgrounds is a surfer’s paradise. Split the peak with your mates and enjoy the breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs. On smaller days, Playgrounds can be enjoyed by any level of surfer. Having said that, when the swell turns up, Playgrounds is best enjoyed by those with more experience.

Higher tides bring about strong currents, so surfing Playgrounds at mid-tide is your best bet. Make sure to take your last wave before the reef starts to show. This is, after all, one of the sharpest and most lively reefs on the island.
Don’t let the name fool you.

MAHANA POINT

Just over the Yellow Bridge, Mahana Point is found on Nusa Ceningan Island. A left-hand point break that delivers long, faster walls. Due to its location, Mahana Point picks up a lot more swell, and can therefore be bigger and more tricky. The wave breaks beach-break style without a channel on either side. If Lembongan is flat, take your scooter over the bridge and you are likely to find a wave at Mahana Point. It’s also a great spot for non-surfers, with a Warung and great viewing area to watch surf.

Introduction of EdTech solutions to facilitate Remedial Literacy and Numeracy education for grade 2 to 6 students in Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan, utilizing tablets and specialized apps. We are seeking funds to support at least 65 students who require improvement in their numeracy and literacy skills through tablets and welfare of the teachers.

Teacher & program funding

Ensure funding is met to sustain the presence of BCF teachers at 7 schools, who provide English as Foreign Language (EFL), STEAM-H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math, Humanity), EdTech for grade 1 students, and Youth Empowerment by educating and training junior & senior high school students with environmental issues to help keep Lembongan and Ceningan clean.

Priority Patients

Continued support for the Priority Patients program, assisting individuals seeking treatment for early epilepsy, behavioural and mobility issues, plus speech therapy.

Health care for the seniors

Continue working with Bunda (our ‘island angel’ and certified nurse) to provide health support to the elderly and disadvantaged.

Our Journey

The Lembongan Traveller turns 10 this month ( August 2023) and we’ve came a long way! What started as an Instagram post 10 years ago has now evolved to a boutique property management company with a website, app, and social media accounts with a strong following of fellow “Lembongan Lovers”. We’d like to thank you for your support, without you our team (and smiles) would not have grown this big!

2013

Our founder, Tania Walker, made the first Instagram post on The Lembongan Traveller account.

Shortly after returning to Australia from their Lembongan holiday, founders Tania and Mal Walker brainstormed of a business idea that focuses on promoting Nusa Lembongan as a tourism destination.

2014

Our first website was launched. The Lembongan Traveller was born from the idea of having a platform dedicated to ‘everything’ Lembongan. Since then we have had expanded our website to include all things Lembongan and added a FREE Island mobile app too.

2015

We welcomed our first staff member. The Lembongan Traveller was run from Dunsbrough, Western Australia, at this point.

2016

The collapse of Yellow Bridge connecting Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan devastated the community in October 2016. We raised over AU$ 35,000 to assist the families impacted by loss of lives and injury, funds also went towards community education programs. This included the “Computer in the Village” initiative, co-ordinated by our charity partners Bali Children Foundation which ensured access to computers for high school students.

2018

The company officially relocated their operations from Australia to Nusa Lembongan. The beginning of elevating the business to deliver the customer service we are renowned for today.

2019

We welcomed opened first Nusa Lembongan office and welcomed three local staff. Since then we have moved to bigger offices as our team grew.

2020 – 2021

The pandemic hit the community badly and our cause Love for Lembongan was born to help the community in need. Thanks to the generous donations from you all, our team worked together to distribute food supplies and provide health care support for the community. Together with Bali Children Foundation, we also launched a literacy program for children who missed schooling during the pandemic.

2022

Tourism slowly came back Lembongan and The Lembongan Traveller grew with expansion further into property management and offering a one stop solution for Nusa Lembongan holiday makers. It was a wonderful sight to see visitors on the island and local businesses re-opening.

2023

We celebrate our 10th birthday and are extremely proud of the entire TLT team who have helped thousands of people with their Lembongan holiday plans. As the only travel agent with an operations and reservations presence on the island representing Lembongan’s best villas, resorts and bungalows, we are committed to making sure your holiday is planned to perfection and the Lembongan locals continue prosper from tourism in the years to come.
